Isn’t it exciting when cities grow? Imagine living in a neighborhood where the new goes hand in hand with the old. Suddenly, new life is breathed into once-dormant areas. Kvarnholmen, a peninsula just outside downtown Stockholm, is one such area. On Kvarnholmen, not only have homes and workplaces been created, but also a rich cultural life, excellent local services, and good transportation links.

More about New Kvarnholmen

The Kvarnholmen neighborhood, which is now being revitalized, will become an attractive and vibrant district with its own identity, through innovative thinking and respect for existing historic buildings. The goal is to create a good balance between residential and office spaces, local amenities, restaurants, schools, culture, and recreation. We are making room for 3,700 new homes and 30,000 square meters of commercial space.

Kvarnholmen’s old industrial buildings—such as Qvarnen Tre Kronor, Silon, Hamnkontoret, and Hamnmagasinet—are being carefully converted into residential spaces. At the same time, new buildings are being constructed. The new developments will stand side by side with the old ones without imitating or overshadowing them. Certain other buildings, such as Havrekvarnen and Makaronifabriken, will become offices, cultural centers, neighborhood hubs, or schools. All of this is aimed at creating a dynamic neighborhood that is bustling with life.

Kvarnholmen Development

Kvarnholmen Utveckling AB (Kuab) is leading the urban development of Kvarnholmen and is jointly owned by JM and Peab. Our work involves collaborating with the Municipality of Nacka to develop detailed plans for approximately 3,500 new homes and commercial spaces on Kvarnholmen. We are responsible for environmental initiatives and are developing the necessary infrastructure. This involves building new roads, piers, parks, stairways, and utility corridors for electricity, fiber optics, district heating, water, and sewer systems, among other things.

We are also planning various activities throughout the island and will find ways to bring the necessary services here, such as a local community center, a health clinic, restaurants, and cafés. All of this is aimed at creating a vibrant neighborhood where you won’t have to leave the island to run your daily errands.

However, we don’t build any housing—we leave that to others.

Fantastic location

From the heights of Kvarnholmen, you have a view of the Stockholm inlet, Djurgården, Fjäderholmarna, Lidingö, and all the way out to Vaxholm. Kvarnholmen is bordered by Saltsjön to the north and Svindersviken to the south.

The north side faces the bustling, open waters of Saltsjön and the shipping lanes leading into Slussen. This is where the SL commuter ferry and other boats dock.

Sweeping views

This is also where you can watch massive cruise ships pass by on their way to and from Stockholm. The south side, overlooking Svindersviken, is much quieter and forms a secluded oasis with a Skåne-like climate.

From here, you have a view of Ryssberget, a lush nature reserve with pine trees that are up to 500 years old.
